MELODIC ROCK NIGHT – LOCAL BANDS – OVERDOG + SPECIAL GUESTS
Those Handsome Animals: 8:50pm
Local Leytonstone band Overdog play intricate, melodic rock, with lots of dynamic shifts, sweet vocal harmonies and lyrics about how people manage to communicate.
Having released their first crowdfunded album in autumn 2016 and having been gigging in London since then, this is their first completely self-organised gig. They will be joined by two other high-quality London bands, hand-picked for their musicianship and complementary style.
This will be a properly curated event showcasing great local songwriting and performance. And it will be a lot of fun!
Come and check out a band in the ascendancy.
THOSE HANDSOME ANIMALS:
Those Handsome Animals set out to create music with a new set of influences. Tired of the sounds surrounding them, they raided their dad’s rock collection to create something that sounds like both the past and future at the same time. Obsessing over song structure and harmonised guitars, the group have broken down the traditional pop song and molded it in their own image. The muscular backing section of Dean Palmer (bass) and Derrick Carter (drums) forms the foundations for not just Gavin Hankins’ creative guitaristry, but also Thomas Millett’s unique lyrics about how he sees modern life. They’re taking pop songs back to a rawer, guitar-fuelled age. It’s loud, but it’s not stupid. They’re not here to make “LadRock”, they’re here to do something different with it.
Elm bring distinctive songwriting together with an honest and unfussy musicianship. Elm’s two singers and songwriters cover a lot of different ground, knitting everything together in a sound which is familiar and innovative by turns: intimate guitar music with Nick Drake overtones morphs into sweeping Grizzly Bear alt-rock tunes and back again.
